I'm going to add this disclaimer first, as we usually avoid this, but at the moment is needed, and the disclaimer is that I say this not out of malice, but out of fact:
Actually, we CAN stop the exams. For those given captain ranks now, we will not be retesting them, as it is completely pointless at this juncture.
When the notice for captains was first put up, at that point, the whole idea of fair to those who worked hard was out the window. How is it fair to give someone a captaincy based solely on a test? IT ISN'T!!!
But the fact is it was agreed we needed more captains, thus Ruru set off and advertised.
So the whole arguement of fair is a moot point.
Secondly, what about the captains we have now? I don't recall anyone spending months as a recruit; moving up seat by seat; or taking a test for that matter.
The truth is everyone works on the basis of pass/fail. NO ONE is immune to being removed from their spot; thus old captains and new ones alike have to give their best to keep their spot, therefore your second point is validated already.
Third, exactly where do we get the temp captains from? Will they magically appear or should we use NPCS?
Well since magic doesn't solve it, NPCS are the only answer; but who will play them? Me and Ruru? We already have to many npcs going now to keep up with, and that is just so that we can keep things rolling when it gets slow, and people won't take off. Their are to many NPCs as is, so the only real choice would be to have no captain, and that would be exactly what we had before the decision to add captains, which would make everything we have done over the last few months absolutely pointless. That concludes that arguement.
Lastly, this was a decision made by the admins, and I say that not just because I agreed to it, but RURU did as well. The decision, if you had read my previous post and gave some thought to it, out of good old fashioned practicality. We have to many spots to fill, and to many tests to give and judge, because let's be honest; in the end it would end up with ruru or myself giving an answer after reading everything, and right now we are stretched thin just trying to keep the site active.
Now as I stated in the last post, the idea is that we now have filled the spots; from here on in, the exam is a must and thats that. And you see in the time between when we have to give another exam and now, we will be able to refine it so that we don't just have to give part, then a long wait, then more..etc... and finally the applicant quits because we can't get our ---- together long enough to be able to conduct the exam properly.
the way this place has always worked is as a democracy. And that is good and should remain, without question. However there are times when those tasked with managing things have to make decisions without consulting others, and this was one of those moments. in the end, even my say so is limited to RURU's word, so we all have someone to answer to, so to speak.
The last thing I am going to say is this; While I do not need or even feel the need to justify the admin decision to anyone, I have chosen to do so. None of us have ever made a decision that wasn't in the best interest of the forum. We may not get everything right, but we keep in mind why we are doing it. I'm sorry if anyone feels that we make decisions because we are lazy or just don't want to deal with something, I'm sorry because that's not our problem. What is our problem is that we have to do what's best for the forum, popular or not. Now I appreciate the thoughts on whether or not anyone thinks it's a good idea, but in the end, it's going to stand as is, basically because there is no logical reason not to; and frankly I cannot see how this is a major enough issue to waste space on a thread when a couple of PMs could have resolved it. Now I've been around here longer than any of you guys and say that because it means I've had time to watch: a lot. If We want to talk about Fair, then what we should do is strip all captains and have them go through the exam to get their spot back. That is the only true FAIR thing to do. But it wouldn't make sense, because I personally do not feel anyone in a captains spot right now shouldn't be there. I happen to like the job they are doing in their roles and it's working for our RP section.
Now is there any other complaints?
