Do you think Isshin was a captain? If so, then which squad do you think he was leader of?
I'm certain he was a captain since he seemed to have the dregs of a captains robe over his shihakusho when he fought the grandfisher. Also TK hinted towards him being a captain when he said "I always knew Isshin would be a shinigami but i didn't intend on him being a captain because at the start, i didn't plan on having any captains or leaders" (paraphrasing).
As for the division. I find Isshin's personality to be quite similar to someone like Shunsui or Ukitake(who i'm certain he would have been good friends with). So i'm certain he wasn't in charge of something like the 11th which seems like quite a serious division. Perhaps he was the leaders of the 4th, i mean he is a doctor.
