He wears a standard sleeveless captain's haori with a green sash around his shoulders, held together by a round clip. The sash holds his Zanpakuto's sheath in place on his back and is tied to it at either end. He sometimes walks around in his tabi. He is relatively young by Shinigami standards and has the appearance of a child.
Personality: Toshiro is generally mature and serious. Tōshiro is shown to be easily annoyed by others goofing off or drawing unneeded attention to themselves. Higarami hates anything that he deems childish as well as being described as something close to a child, such as an elementary school child, a further contrast to his appearance.Higarami dislikes summer and warm weather in general. It is also known that Tōshiro's favorite foods are watermelon and amanattō. He does not like dried persimmons.

Character Story: Higarami comes from the province of Junrinan in the 1st District of West Rukongai. Due to his eccentric outer appearance, Toshiro was rejected by many. Thus, he developed a cold, yet caring personality. Even at a young untrained age, Higarami could hear the calling of his Zanpakuto spirit, Kuro-Ou. Despite this he never told anyone and couldn't accurately determine what was happening other than to assume it was an ever recurring dream. His friends from the next door were scared of him, even though he had never done anything to them. His grandmother, "Granny", and Raitei were the only ones in the district that weren't afraid of him. His personality was supposedly "cold as ice" or at least thought to be, and he often wondered if it was due to his appearance or attitude. When Raitei had been in the Shinigami Academy for 5 years, he began to notice how he hadn't grown an inch. He noticed that Raitei's hair grew longer and he visited less often, seemingly having a goal in his life now. He also noticed that "Granny" was getting skinnier.
While out at the market one day a shopkeeper, whom he was buying items from, was treating him disdainfully. He then meets a vice captain of 10th division, who yells at the shop keeper for being rude to Higarami and reproached him for his poor customer skills. When Higarami turns around, he is knocked down by bumping into legs of vice captain. The vice captain then yells at him for "lying there and crying about it and not standing up like a man", although it was she who had knocked him down in the first place. He then shakes the vice captain off and runs away.
Later that night, he has a vivid dream of a gigantic, dark, clocked man and an echoing voice. This dream is markedly different from the previous ones, where he had only experienced sensations but nothing substantial to what the meaning might be. This time, however, the reason behind the dreams not only materializes, but tries to tell him its name. Higarami cannot hear him, however, as his voice is muffled by strong winds. He then wakes up in a cold sweat. Upon waking up, he sees the vice captain and is surprised to see the vice captain in his home. The vice captain immediately tells him to stop leaking his reiatsu everywhere and to get some sleep. She further explains that his grandmother looks pretty sick, which causes Higarami to notice for the first time that the room is exceedingly dread and affecting his grandmother. The vice captain then tells him he should become a Shinigami, stating that kids with power as strong as his need to learn how to bring their power under control. She explains that if he stays the way he is, his power will end up killing his grandmother. At first, Higarami isn't sure what the vice captain is talking about but the vice captain calmly places her hand on his chest and asks him if he hears a voice calling out to him. The vice captain explains to him that once he has found that voice, he'll understand how to control his power. The vice captainthen notes that for that to happen he must become a Shinigami.
Soon after, he tells his grandmother of his intentions of becoming a Shinigami. Much to Higarami's surprise, she is happy for him. She tells him that she had always felt that he holds everything in because he didn't want to leave her, but doing so was only hurting him and in turn seeing him that way, hurt her. Higarami then leaves to follow his own path with his grandmother's blessing.
With Higarami's natural talent, he quickly entered the Shinigami Academy and graduated early despite his age. Raitei continued to call him "little brat" out of habit and felt he needed to protect him. Because of a promise he had made, he only began to call him "Higarami" after he had achieved his Zanpakuto's Shikai and was recognized as a Shinigami. Highly capable and knowledgeable, he quickly became the youngest of the captains within the Gotei 13 in the entire history of Soul Society.

Sealed Appearance: When sealed, Kuro Ou looks like a normal katana with the exception of the guard, which is in the shape of a four-pointed bronze-colored star. Its hilt is light blue and sheath dark blue. The sheath completely dissolves when he draws his sword. The sword is somewhat longer than most Zanpakutō, at about 1.4 meters long, making it taller than Higarami, preventing him from wearing it at the hip. Instead he carries it on his back by his green sash over his right shoulder.
Zanpakuto Spirit Description: Bene Ou is the strongest of all dark-element Zanpakuto in Soul Society. As such, Higarami doesn't need dark background to be present in order for him to use its abilities. Higarami's control over Bene Ou's power has been shown great enough to use any of its Bankai attacks (with less control) with Shikai.

Shikai Release Phrase: Fill the skies with thy Madness
Released Appearance: Bene-Ou does not change in appearance. It only gains a chain attached to the end of its hilt, which has a spike looking accessory over the end of the chain.

Released Appearance: Bene-ou gains a crescent moon shaped crest over its star-shaped guard.

Terms of Usage: Toshiro calls the name of the technique.
Description: It disintegrates everything upon contact. It, however, fades when countered with a technique that's even in caliber from a light-elemental user. Only the strongest light-elemental Zanpakuto may fully counter the technique. Other than that, there's no way to fully nullify the technique. The foe is still can dodge the attack by using shunpo.
Name: Clock of Death
State: Bankai
Terms of Usage:Calling the name of the technique isn't necessary. Toshiro hides his body inside his clock.
Description: Any attack that's not of light attribute will not be able to penetrate its defense. Only the strongest of light-attributed Zanpakuto may penetrate its defenses. It lasts for 1 post per use. The downside is that he is only allowed to block one attack. It cannot function in a consecutive manner.
Name: Orb of Chaos
State: All
Terms of Usage:Toshiro needs to charge the attack for 1 post. He is unable to wield his Zanpakuto, while the attack is being charged.
Description: After the charge, an energy orb can be shot out of Toshiro's blade. It is then fired at his designated area. The orb sucks in anything that's not of light element. It then explodes with everything that's been sucked into it. It drains Toshiro 10% of his energy per use.
Name: Scattering Rage of the Emperor
State: All
Terms of Usage:Toshiro needs to call the name of the technique.
Description: It has same effect as the Black stream of Death. The technique involves having a stream of reiatsu exerted from Toshiro's body and scatters it over multiple targets. It can be deflected by using Danku spell.
Name: Death Burial of Sinner
State: Bankai
Terms of Usage: The technique needs an activation of "Pouring Tears of Solemn one."
Description: Hiragami spreads a curtain of darkness in a wide-range area. It then envelops the intended target and eventually sucks away 1/3 of spirit energy out of the target. It can be avoided, only if the opponent chooses to use a large-scale attack as "Death Burial of Sinner," upon the activation of the technique.
Name: Pouring Tears of Solemn one.
State: All
Terms of Usage:Toshiro needs to call on the name of the technique.
Description: The technique changes the surrounding dimension, area, and surroundings to that of dimension of void. It significantly raises up Toshiro's attacking power by roughly 3 times.
Name: Chain of Oblivion
State: All
Terms of Usage:This technique does not require Higarami to call on the name of the technique itself. He needs to catch his target with the chain that's attached to his sword.
Description: It can disintegrate a target who's caught by Higarami's chain that's attached to his Zanpakuto. It can be deflected or blocked by having an object that's not part of his/her possession in place of his/her own body or sword.
Downsides for his techniques: They are immune to light-elemental techniques. They cannot, however, be completely nullified, unless countered with strongest light-elemental zanpakuto.
